About Upper Eastwood

Upper Eastwood commands a rugged prominence high above the Calder Valley, where the air thins and sharpens against the gritstone edges. It lies 1.9 miles north-east of Todmorden (from Todmorden: bearing 53°T, OS grid SD 961 260), and is situated south-south-east of Blackshaw Head village. Weather-beaten stone cottages cling to the slope, their dark masonry drinking in the pale, horizontal light that defines these Pennine heights. A short walk to the north-north-west leads to Great Rock, a massive, singular crag that watches over the moorland like a silent sentinel of the high ridges. Below this exposed vantage, the hidden, verdant depth of Jumble Hole Clough carves a cool, moss-streaked scar into the landscape, offering a sheltered sanctuary from the biting upland winds. Winter frost clings longer to the shadows of Upper Eastwood, turning the sparse grass into a brittle, silvered crust. The silence here is rarely absolute, broken only by the thin, melodic rush of water spilling toward the lower reservoirs. Here, the land does not yield easily to the plough, preferring instead to hold its own austere and lonely character against the passing of the seasons.
