Colerne occupies a high, exposed limestone plateau that commands long, reaching views across the western Wiltshire landscape. It lies 3.4 miles west of Corsham (from Corsham: bearing 275°T, OS grid ST 817 710), and is situated south-south-west of Thickwood village. The pale, honey-coloured stone of the local architecture absorbs the afternoon sun, reflecting a warmth that lingers long after the light has begun to fail. Beneath the ridge, the quiet waters of Lid Brook trace a deliberate path through the earth, carving out the verdant depression of Lidbrooks Bottom. Ancient woodland at Franks Wood provides a sharp, dark contrast to the open fields, where the wind moves with an insistent, restless energy. Colerne retains a sturdy, utilitarian character, shaped by centuries of quarrying that left the surrounding hillsides jagged and exposed.
