About Corton

Corton remains a quiet assembly of stone and slate huddled against the chalky flanks of the Wylye Valley. It lies 4.7 miles south-east of Warminster (from Warminster: bearing 127°T, OS grid ST 934 405), and is situated west-south-west of Upton Lovell village. Ancient earthworks define the horizon here, where the Corton Long Barrow stands as a silent sentinel just two hundred metres to the south-west, its grass-grown spine holding the memory of Neolithic hands. The land rises sharply toward Barrow Hill, where the wind strips the scent of damp soil and crushed limestone from the steep slopes. Sunlight catches the pale, porous rock of the local farmsteads, reflecting a brilliance that makes the very air appear thin and crystalline. Beyond the immediate pastures, the deep crease of Whatcomb Bottom draws the eye toward a horizon that has changed little since the first fires were lit in these chalky hollows. Corton persists in this stillness, indifferent to the fretful momentum of the modern world, anchored firmly to the bedrock of its own long-standing geography.
