Higher Pertwood reveals itself as a quiet collection of farmsteads amidst the chalky, expansive ridges of the Wiltshire Downs. It lies 5.2 miles east-north-east of Mere (from Mere: bearing 66°T, OS grid ST 889 358), and is situated north-west of Hindon village. The light here has a particular clarity, catching the pale, flint-strewn earth that has sustained generations of agriculture. Ancient traces remain nearby, where a section of Roman road on Pertwood Down cuts a purposeful, straight line through the modern grazing pastures. To the south-east, the slopes of Bockerly Hill rise to meet the wide, unencumbered sky, offering a vantage point over the humped landscape. Higher Pertwood maintains a modest, functional character, far removed from the bustle of the lowland valleys. The air possesses a sharpness that seems to quicken the senses, especially when the wind brushes against the exposed chalk ridges.
