Kilmington occupies a quiet corner of the Wiltshire landscape where the land rises in soft, deliberate folds toward the horizon. It lies 3.5 miles north-west of Mere (from Mere: bearing 312°T, OS grid ST 771 362), and is situated south-west of Maiden Bradley village. Limestone cottages define the character of Kilmington, their pale walls catching a particular quality of afternoon light that turns the stone a warm, honeyed ochre. To the south, the expansive grounds of Stourhead offer a grand contrast to the modest, domestic scale of the local lanes and gardens.
