Ridge reveals itself as a quiet collection of dwellings gathered upon the chalky spine of the Wiltshire landscape. It lies 7.9 miles north-east of Shaftesbury (from Shaftesbury: bearing 45°T, OS grid ST 954 320), and is situated west-south-west of Chilmark village. The land rises sharply at Ridge Hill, a modest limestone incline that commands a view of the surrounding pastoral patchwork. To the west, the canopy of Little Ridge Wood holds the morning mist in its tangled branches, shielding the ground from the early sun. The earth here is porous and pale, drinking the rain until the fields seem to glow with an inner, subterranean light. Ancient barrows mark the horizon, silent earthen humps that have watched the slow turning of seasons over centuries of husbandry. Ridge remains a place where the wind carries the scent of damp flint and crushed grass, undisturbed by the hurried clamour of modern thoroughfares. Life in Ridge follows the measured pace of the turning seasons, tethered to the stony, unyielding character of the Nadder Valley.
