Rockley remains a quiet collection of dwellings where the chalky earth meets the expansive sky of the Marlborough Downs. It lies 2.1 miles north-west of Marlborough (from Marlborough: bearing 318°T, OS grid SU 165 717), and is situated west of Ogbourne Maizey village. The landscape here holds the silence of high ground, marked by the ancient, grassy humps of a bowl barrow that rests half a mile north of the manor. This burial site, part of the Rockley Plantation Barrow Cemetery, serves as a stark reminder of those who walked these ridges long before modern fences divided the grazing land. To the west, the dry chalk valley of Temple Bottom carves a pale, winding path through the turf, catching the low, slanted light of an autumn afternoon. Rockley persists as a place where the horizon feels exceptionally wide, dominated by the stark simplicity of the rolling terrain. The surrounding downland, including the distant enclosure on Ogbourne Down, offers little shelter from the wind that perpetually scours the open slopes. In the stillness of the afternoon, the flint-strewn paths of Rockley seem to hold the memory of horses and carts that once laboured toward the higher ground.
